“Evolve”, the first album of composer, violinist and sound explorer Vito Gatto, is a concept album that guides the listener on a one-way journey through the various phases of an imaginary evolutionary process.
For this work, Vito decided to put himself in a restricted composing environment; arpeggiator lines, based on the same micro sample of one single violin note, are used as the musical transfiguration of a primary particle, which takes part in the mutation process to build the molecular structure.
Instinctive execution, almost improvised, of other elements like distorted bass lines, hardcore inspired percussions and alienating strings melodies represents unexpected alterations: everything is mutable, as if there is no right way to Be or Become; every difference, every imperfection, every unplanned event, intrinsically represents the beauty of being alive.
The album tracklist itself is an expression of evolutionary phases: from the minimalistic piano piece “Decomposition” to “Quiete”, which expresses the state of rest, after something has changed.
“Nostalgia” and “Stasi” represent a sort of doubtful state of trance, with no directional change: “am I in the right place? Is this what I wanted at the beginning? Do I have to keep evolving, or should I try to regress?”
“Evolve” creates continuous connections between traditional and experimental, making classical instruments dialogue with industrial techno, ambient, noise and de(re)constructed sounds.
